Can You Over Condition Your Hair?

It’s true; too much of a good thing can lead to consequences!

Conditioned hair is healthy and something that we all strive for. That being said, you can over-condition your hair to the point it starts rebelling against you!

How do you know if your hair is over conditioned?

You’ll notice your hair becoming unmanageable; this can range from looking soft, limp, mushy, or flat. It can even look heavier than normal, clumpy, dry and brittle.

You may notice your hair has lost it’s texture (this is seen most evidently in hair types 2, 3, and 4 as your curl pattern will be wonky or over-relaxed) or that it’s slipping out of buns or hair styles. If you have thin, fine hair you may notice it looks and feels weighed down and oily.

If this sounds familiar, you can easily solve this issue by limiting the amount of hair conditioner you use and reducing the daily usage of other styling products.

Start by thoroughly shampooing your scalp and hair. Use a scalp massage brush on scalp and build up a good lather on your actual hair. Work into your scalp and hair for at least 2-3 minutes.

A nice treat for the hair is using an apple cider vinegar rinse 1-2 times a month. You’ll be aiming for a ratio of 1:2 parts apple cider vinegar to water. You can apply this after shampooing and then rinse out (don’t worry, you cannot smell the vinegar once rinsed out).

You can always opt for a protein treatment as this helps balance the moisture and conditioners in the hair. Believe it or not, there is an easy protein treatment to make at home!

We’ll be sharing it on our instagram this week!
